Proud (A Promise Kept)
04:23
|
|||
We always think we have so much time
Spend forever on the nickel and dime
Who knows when you reach the end of the line
If I listen close I can hear you whisper
Remember baby face kissing Daddy's whisker
We'd circle up and sing "Mama-mia come on home" any time we missed her
A kangaroo ride in sawdust covered Carhartts
After coming home in the pitch dark
A promise kept from a worn out worker to a kid with a full heart
I'll meet you in my dreams, keep you alive in my memory
I'm catching up but you're so far ahead of me
I'll make you proud, make you proud of me
I remember getting calls when I was way overdue
"Want to make sure that you're breathing, haven't heard from you"
It drove me crazy - I could see straight through and I wouldn't say I'm sorry
Now I wish for that long belated call
To hear that you're still breathing - haven't heard from you at all
Did the big one pull you in or did time just get away from a kid with a full heart
I'll meet you in my dreams, keep you alive in my memory
I'm catching up but you're so far ahead of me
I'll make you proud, make you proud of me

Hopesablaze

When the west was rich with cowboys you found your man
The Ex had taken it badly, had been in love madly, in love with my land
Moving trucks backed to the door and all the neighbors knew the score
A beaming bride and old cowboy on the road again
Said "Jump in the car girl, let's get outta town"
Had no idea we'd come back to what we found
Now we'll never really know (take a guess) who burned down our nest
We'll never put a face to the name who set our hopes ablaze
Comin' up over the ridge, smoke in the air
Oh my God, my dear, the hilltop is burning, our home should be there
Tire tracks fresh in the snow
Gas cans on the front lawn glow
Comin' up over the ridge, smoke in the air
Now we'll never really know (take a guess) who burned down our nest
We'll never put a face to the name who set our hopes ablaze
The snow fell as hard as our dreams and the blaze lit the eastern sky
We held each other close and we knew we'd make it through the night

So Alive
03:10
|
|||
Guess some feelings never really go away
This one came around for another day
I miss you - now the sting has been replaced by an aching in my heart - it won't go away
Imagine my surprise when just last night you showed up right by my side
I was so glad I found you, threw may arms around you
Never seen you looking so alive
I want to see it, I want to believe it's true
I've been stuck in a rut but I dreamed I woke up talking to you
My throat was in a knot I could hardly speak
I wondered if you held secrets from the deep
You said "Slow down boy, you'll wear yourself thin. You gotta come back home inside your skin"
I had so many questions we had so little time
You had so few answers but you looked in my eye
Said "I'm doing all right, hon, I'm still around. You'll be just fine, keep your feet on the ground"
I want to see it, I want to believe it's true
I've been stuck in a rut but I dreamed I woke up talking to you

What a laugh this is, I just can't wait to tell our friends and see how this thing ends
We're gonna make a mil and sell our story on TV from the middle of the sea
It's all right, it's all right
We're not gonna die tonight
Hold your breath for a rising tide
We're gonna make it out of this alive
When we pushed away we both blew kisses to the shore and thought we'd see her more
When we caught our breath we lost, we lost sight of the land
Just hold on my friend - I know what you're thinking, the spark has left your eye
Maybe if we last the night someone will come along
Just keep holding on
It's all right, it's all right
We're not gonna die tonight
Hold your breath for a rising tide
We're gonna make it out of this alive
It's all right, it's all right
if we don't make it through the night
I'll say a prayer if you like
Just stay afloat and hope to see a light

On a hot and sticky stretch of Interstate 80 In the summer of 2005
Me and the boys and a van full of toys killin' time to keep the dream alive
Drinkin' up the beauty of the Iowa freeway, flat farms as far as the eye can see
We were all a little bored and a little more behind so we pushed the van harder and cranked the AC
Last night we played Gabe's down in Iowa City, a waste of a 4-hour drive
A touring bill of the "Twin Cities' Finest" played for a roomfull of FIVE
Tonight will be better, such beautiful weather, just 200 more miles to go
When under the hood something's up to no good
Watch as our hopes pour onto the road
Maybe we can find a song where we all can sing along
Echoes in a song let the voices carry on
We've paid our dues now it's time to collect call AAA for a tow
A couple hours later we're hitched to the trailer
Off to Nebraska we roll
Sitting and waiting and swimming in heat
Sharing the ditch with the ticks and the fleas
If I'd taken shop we'd be back on our feet, but we opted for choir instead
Now our hope for tonight's show is dead
Maybe we can find a song where we all can sing along
Echoes in a song let the voices carry on
Maybe we can find a song where we all can sing along
This will carry on when the days have come and gone
The tour's passed us by and the bottom's fallen out
We're left with a wreck and a pile of doubt
With nothing but debt left and no van to drive we'll do our best to survive
Storm sirens sounding
The kick drum is pounding
The crowd drowning out all the noise
The ringing of ears from a trail of tears
It's good to be back with the boys

You're a pretty thing, watch where you stand
He's a smooth one, you'd better watch his hand
He'll tell you everything you want to hear
Hey that guy you just made eyes with maybe has a plan
For a way to make a coward feel like a man
He'll tell you everything you want to hear
Watch as the room begins to smear baby
But don't you let it go, don't you let it go
Wait for the smoke to start to clear baby
Before you let it go, don't you let it go
Hey baby - blow me off and look away
Drink up - you'll be givin' me the time of day
You're comin' home with me - don't walk away
Watch as the room begins to smear baby
But don't you let it go, don't you let it go
Wait for the smoke to start to clear baby
Before you let it go, don't you let it go
(Cover your glasses, you'll move like cold molasses)

4 Leaf Clover
04:31
|
|||
Drinking the smoke from a roadside cafe with a lump in my throat - I can't swallow my eggs
I've been a fool and I've always cared for you though it hasn't always seemed that way
Excuses are easy to find, but reasons are hard - I just run out of time
I know I didn't call you from out on the road but you were always the one on my mind
Lately my dear I've been searching my diary for pages when you were still mine
The words covered over by a pressed 4-leaf clover plucked from a luckier time
The secrets I keep are transparent at best
I heard some advice that hit close to my chest
Said "This kinda girl don't come along every day - She's a catch, don't let her get away"
Lately my dear I've been searching my diary for pages when you were still mine
The words covered over by a pressed 4-leaf clover plucked from a luckier time
I'll get some new jokes and a puppy named Folks - you'll love him from very first sight
Then someday maybe you'll call me your baby like you did in my dreams tonight

The Things You See In Me
03:52
|
|||
Lately I've been down and I've been reeling and nothing's giving me the bite
Turn the faucet on - echoes of a song, but nothing's coming out tonight
I've tried everything from the ceiling to the ground
My hands are black with coal but a diamond won't be found
Do my best to pry the rain down from the sky but the ground is good and dry tonight
I confess I'm a mess, but honey you know that you know me best
I confess I'm a mess, but honey
I confess I'm a mess, but honey you know, you know
I don't know if I can ever be all the things that you see, things that you see in me
I don't know if I can be all the things that you see, things that you see
I've been dying for that something that makes me feel alive
But coming up with nothing no matter how I try
Can I take another zero and still give an ounce of fight
Make a comeback, be the hero
Nothing's coming out tonight
I don't know if I can ever be all the things that you see, things that you see in me
I don't know if I can be all the things that you see, things that you see
Cuz I'm feeling down, down, down . . .
Forgive me my dear but I just need to hear what's written all over your face
A hundred times for the broken up lines
Putting me back into place
I don't know if I can ever be all the things that you see, things that you see in me
I don't know if I can be all the things that you see, things that you see

Sunshine After Rain
03:08
|
|||
I wish I could have come home sooner
To be the good supporter, to be the one to spoon her
If you can hang around for another hopeful day
I promise this will turn around, like sunshine after rain
Sometimes the road is hard, and there's no easy way around it
I'd love to take the highline or the subway underground it
Maybe cut a corner, maybe thumb a friendly ride
But we've got to keep on moving while time is on our side
It's hard to find your way with a flashlight on a bright day when your map is just a white word written on a white page
We can take a little dark and sparks will have more meaning
I promise this will turn around, as sure as my skin is peeling
I wouldn't be surprised if you're the one to pull us through
You deserve so much more than you would ever think you do
I think if I just swing enough I'll get a lucky hit
Then maybe we can plant a seed and pour ourselves all over it
And we can grow together and keep pushing through the pain
I promise this will turn around, like sunshine after rain

Hope
02:48
|
|||
So you've reached the end of the ride but you want to stay inside
The thrill you thought you'd get, you haven't felt it yet
And you would do it all again if it would only mean the end of the heartache and the emptiness
There is hope further down the road
The storm is heading east I'm told
There is hope further down the road
The Minnesota cold has chilled you to the bone
And the snow has buried deep the roads to get back home
Just give it some time dear and the air will start to clear
There is hope further down the road
The storm is heading east I'm told
There is hope further down the road
Sunny skies in Idaho
There is hope further down the road

Love You More
03:45
|
|||
Another year gone by with that thorn in your side
I know you've got some things to say to me love
I know I coulda been, I know I shoulda been, I wish I woulda been better to you
But I know I can change, I can be a better lover
Saying it is one thing and doing is another
I love you more than you'll ever know
I hope that one day I'll be less about me and more about you
Less about me so I can show you
I can't help but see you look away from me
I'll ask you twice, I know it drives you crazy
I know I don't work hard enough for you
You ask me to and I want to
But this head's full of memories, regrets and felonies
Tied to a tether but it's gonna get better
I love you more than you'll ever know
I hope that one day I'll be less about me and more about you
Less about me so I can show you
You're a streetlight shining in a ghost town
Beacon of hope in a city of letdown
You're my bright light shining in a ghost town
This town, any town here with you now
We'd light up any town, burn bright any town
You're a bright light shining when the big city feels like a small town full of letdown
You're the bright light, eyes wide open in the big city night like a kid from a ghost town
I love you more than you'll ever know
I hope that one day I'll be less about me and more about you
Less about me so I can show you

Writing In Ink
05:06
|
|||
I don't want to miss my chance
See it clearly at a backward glance that I waited too long and I let you slip away
This time I'm picking up my pen to write this year what I've known for ten
We've been writing in pencil all this time but wouldn't erase a day
I think we found our
I think we found our
I think we found our love again
Somehow we managed to survive a thousand dark frozen winter nights
Spring sun melt the ice into water down the river
You're the angel in my life
You're the apple of my eye
And I want you to know what I've known for the longest time
I think we found our
I think we found our
I think we found our love again
So many friends in and out of my life but I won't let you go - not tonight
So many endings to a single line but I found the perfect rhyme
I've never felt so clear my dear
With my voice shaking I'll try to say it
"Do you wanna dance and hold my hand"
Sing along
